4000 sqm of Town Belt To Be Cleared for Water Reservoir

Marina from Brooklyn

Hi neighbours,

Are you aware that the Wellington City Council is planning to put a large water reservoir (35 million litres) in the Prince of Wales Park (Brooklyn Town Belt) instead of increasing capacity of existing reservoirs or developing a more resilient personal water storage options?

The Council has granted permission under the Town Belt Act for the reservoir to be built and applied for RMA consent.

PLEASE CONSIDER PUTTING IN A SUBMISSION BY 27 OCT 4:30 PM, OTHERWISE 4000 SQM OF TOWN BELT LAND WILL BE CLEARED AND THIS HUGE CONSTRUCTION WILL GO AHEAD!

Here are the documents:

Points to note:
- Reservoir will be cut into a slope. When you steepen a slope you can make it more unstable as you are changing the forces operating within the slope. Nobody really knows how these slopes will perform under a really strong earthquake.
- 4000 sqm of town belt land with 100 year old vegetation will be cleared and concreted.
- Bell Rd reservoir is nearby and could be increased, if needed.
- Papawai Stream and Waitangi Stream with native aqua fauna, will be running through a construction site.
- Water stored in this reservoir is drinking water, whereas a household or business needs less water for drinking and a lot more water for other functions (grey water). The grey water can be roof collected individually or communally.
- Individually collected roof water is more resilient in a disaster and can also help with flooding.
- Construction activity will take 3 years, 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday 7 AM to 6 PM, which will obviously result in noise, vibration and dust.
- The two sports fields at Price of Wales Park will be closed for 3 years.
- The Mt Cook area experienced floods in 2013. It is well known that fact that the storm water systems in Wellington are not coping well with the rain fall, especially as the climate is changing. This project will remove existing vegetation (which removes rain water) and will create a large impervious surface.
