Heavy rain and snow will continue battering parts of the South Island into Friday afternoon, as a spring storm makes its way up the country.
Several highways remain closed, including the major link between the east and west coasts due to a road wash-out.

Totara Valley residents have woken to power outages as South Canterbury was subject to more wild weather overnight Tuesday. Alpine Energy says power went out at 10.45pm on Tuesday and was not expected to be restored until midday on Wednesday. Read more
