Cycle trail

Reinhard from Mapua

Yesterday afternoon I went over from Mapua to Rabbit Island for a ride to Brightwater on my bike. About 1.5 kms down the track there was an accident. A lady from the village had fallen from her bike and had bleeding head injuries. Her partner was supporting her. They had called 111 and the ambulance was on their way.

The problem I want to point out is that the ambulance was unable to get to her with their vehicle. The gate at the last carpark was locked and they didn't have a key for that lock. Also, there was another car parked in front of the locked gate. So one of the two St. Johns persons walked the two kilometres into the track to support the injured person. The other one was waiting at the car.

To get a key they would have had to ask the police to bring one from Richmond. The other alternative was to bring the fire brigade in to cut the lock open (that's what they did).

All together I believe it took at least an hour for the ambulance to get to her and another hour or so to get her out and to the hospital.

I don't believe this is an acceptable situation. Maybe all the locks could be standardised to be unlocked with one key, or a numbered lock with special combination or ...
