Plans to add a water ferry to Queenstown's public transport network are under way.
The Otago Regional Council (ORC) said it is looking at subsidising the existing Queenstown Ferries service while it makes plans for a subsidised public ferry in the long term.
Queenstown Ferries announced in November it would end its service in February after failing to get public funding. Go Orange general manager Luke Taylor blamed the regional council for the decision, and said the large number of people using the ferries proved there was demand for the service.
Councillor Alexa Forbes, chair of ORC's transport committee, said on Wednesday that having a public ferry would be a significant step by the council towards improving Queenstown transport.
