A word from Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore
As a community and as a nation, we are facing challenging times. I strongly urge everyone to follow the Ministry of Health’s guidance and visit www.covid19.govt.nz... for the most up to date information. Take sensible precautions around personal health. Covid-19 spreads by droplets, so practicing good hygiene is essential. Wash hands with soap and water, dry thoroughly. Call Healthline if you’re feeling unwell, on 0800 358 5453. Self-isolate if necessary. If you are experiencing symptoms, call your GP before you visit.
We will not run out of food or other supplies, so there is no need to bulk or panic purchase goods. We do not know how this disease will progress. To date, we have not seen any community transmission in New Zealand, but that could change, and we need to be prepared for that.
Plans are in place to ensure critical services continue. Water and rubbish collection services are running, and contingency plans have been put in place. Just like with the water shortages, we have the capacity to enable resources to deliver solutions.
Lastly, look after yourselves and your families, and help others in your community where and when you can. Ask for help if you need it. We will work through this, and there will be a recovery.
Bill Cashmore.
