Can you trust the "Free Range" label?

Paul from Levin

Free Range Eggs: How big would you expect flocks to be to meet your idea of "Free Range"?

60% of NZ-ers surveyed by Consumer NZ answered: 1500 or fewer.
According to Consumer's survey of egg suppliers, of the 32 companies which replied, 2, both certified by Assurequality/Biogro met this expectation as did 1 other not apparently certified, (Benzie Free Range, flock numbers 600 -1000). The Certified companies were:
Bio Eggs (Zealand Farms) 1500
Bio Land Organic Free Range (Pasture Poultry Co.)
500-600
Pasture Poultry Organic Free Range (Pasture Poultry Co)
500-600.

Kirkfield Family Farm came in at 1800.
Big Paddock topped the list, flock sizes 4,000-10000.
Many of the others claimed a range of flock sizes starting at 500 at the low end but with other flocks up to 10,000 in number as in the case of Big Paddock.
Our local company Benniks was not listed.
