Canterbury pub to be demolished, rebuilt after Christmas Eve fire
A 100-year-old Canterbury pub, destroyed by a fire on Christmas Eve, is to be demolished and rebuilt, licensee Steve Evans says.
Kirwee Tavern on West Coast Rd — about 35 kilometres west of Christchurch — was gutted by the blaze, which is understood to have been caused by an electrical fault.
The historic pub — affectionately known as The Wee — will be bulldozed after the rebuild plan was delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown.
