Staying connected through volunteering protects mental health

Hannah Cunningham from Volunteer Marlborough

MenzShed Wellington trustee Steve Jardine says he has seen first-hand what happens when retired people get involved in volunteer projects

"He's seen older, retired men doing nothing but 'waiting for the grim reaper to come to their door'. But he's also seen what happens when they meet join up and meet 'sheddies' - men that are already members.
Menzshed Wellington members forge social connections at the shed - something that will likely lead to better mental health. 'One of the other sheddies will take them under their wing, show them around.' And before you know it, they'd be perking up."
