A project to support weed control on the Waiau Toa Clarence River is set to receive a funding boost.

The Kaikōura Zone Committee has given its support to an $11,800 grant to the Waiau toa/Clarence River weed control rafting trip, which is being led by council staff.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) Kaikōura senior biodiversity officer Heath Melville said the project was the continuation of the Waiau Toa Clarence Braided River Weed Strategy, which the zone committee has supported since 2014.

The project has cost $190,500 to date, with Land Information New Zealand contributing $106,000 and the balance paid by Environment Canterbury.

‘‘This work is about protecting species directly related to the braided river environment,’’ Melville said.

‘‘It is a matter of getting the weed threat down enough so it becomes a more resilient system.’’

He said the additional funding, if approved by ECan’s water and land committee, would fund Clarence River Rafting to transport ECan staff and equipment up the river to complete weed control work.

He anticipated it would be a ‘‘two to three raft mission’’, depending on how many staff and volunteers were available, and take place over four days.

Staff would be dropped off along river terraces and beaches with napsacks to target weeds, including known sources of buddleia and willow.

‘‘Previous efforts have this section relatively clean of gorse and broom, which has been completed in two stages over two years,’’ Melville said.

Councillor Grant Edge said he supported giving the additional funding to the project.

‘‘It is such a major project and it is important work which is getting results.’’

A second project was considered to support landowners at Mt Fyffe with a pest control project, with the zone committee declining support for now.

The landowners will asked for more information and invited to reapply later in the year.

Four projects have already received funding from the Kaikōura Zone Committee’s 2023-24, $75,000 action plan budget.

These include the Hāpuku Catchment Collective ($30,000), Waiau Toa / Clarence Hāpua Protection ($25,000), Waikoau / Lyell Creek, beach clean up and Seaweek events ($1500) and the Tirohanga Wetland project stage 2 ($6610).

■ Ted Howard was re-elected as zone committee chairperson and Robby Roche as deputy chairperson.

■ LDR is local body journalism co-funded by RNZ and NZ On Air.

Peter is helping us out with something that nearly everyone can relate to – dealing with the unsorted photos taking up space on your phone or languishing in boxes in your home.

“Without fail, when I give a talk about getting organised, I’m always asked how to deal with photos,” says Peter.

Boxes of unsorted photos can feel overwhelming to organise so they often get left for many years to clutter up our houses. In addition to this, most of us have smartphones that make it easy to take photos anywhere, so pretty soon our digital photo life becomes cluttered too.
