Fish in a Kaikōura waterway are receiving a helping hand.
Environment Canterbury staff hope to create a fish ladder for Middle Creek/Te Wai o Pātiki at the Mount Fyffe Rd bridge, north of Kaikōura, this summer.
The project had been planned for some time, but weather delayed it.
A fish ladder allowed migrating fish to swim over or around an obstacle on a river.
Environment Canterbury Hurunui and Kaikōura zone facilitator Marco Cataloni said īnanga (whitebait), were "poor climbers", and a fish ladder would allow them and torrentfish to swim into an upper catchment.
"There is huge value to the catchment in creating this passage as it will provide more adult habitat for fish, some of which are at risk or threatened."
A recent survey of Middle Creek found healthy populations of native fish species in the lower reaches of the stream, Cataloni said.
He said re-establishing fish passage would allow species such as redfin bully, bluegill bully, torrentfish, īnanga, kōaro (whitebait) and shortfin and longfin tuna (eels) to thrive.
The survey also found kanakana (pouched lamprey) in Middle Creek, Cataloni said.
"There have been numerous sightings of kanakana in recent years, with one even being caught in a whitebait net (and released) by some interested locals.
"We will continue working with our rivers and surface water science teams to survey to determine what species are present and where."
He said the council was keen to confirm the presence of giant kōkopu (whitebait), which were believed to be alive in the creek.
Environmental DNA work conducted with the Department of Conservation last year indicated their presence.
"There is one confirmed giant kōkopu site in the entire region (close to the mouth of the Orari River), so it would be exciting to locate the fish in Middle Creek," Cataloni said.
