Hi neighbours - thousands of school kids will get a free lunch at school, Jacinda Ardern has announced.

Ardern says "children themselves told us during the consultation on the strategy that going to school hungry was a barrier to their learning."

Education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye says the Government hasn't considered that most schools don't have infrastructure for large scale food preparation and storage. She says "this would cost hundreds of millions and take away the autonomy of parents to provide lunch for their children".

What are your thoughts? Do you think this is a fantastic or flawed idea? Would you prefer that schools prepared your child's lunch?

Morning everyone,

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today that by 2022 all schools and kura will be required to teach NZ's history.

It follows Time To Tell Our Story, a Waikato Times campaign to make teaching our history compulsory in schools.

First arrivals; first encounters and early colonial history; the Treaty of Waitangi and its history; colonisation of, and immigration to, Aotearoa; the New Zealand Wars; the evolving national identity of New Zealand in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; and the country's role in the Pacific are all expected to be covered.

What do you think of the decision? Read more here

NOEL SMITH

NEWCASTLE WARD COUNCILLOR

Hi. I have sent out a flyer to all residents in the ward so hopefully you receive that very soon. I have also been interviewed by the editor of the Te Kowhai District newsletter. As many in the ward won’t get that newsletter I attach below the 3 questions I was asked along with my responses.

1) A bit of info about you / where you’re from / your background.

I’m from a farming background: both sets of grandparents farmed in Rotokauri and Betsy and I have lived and farmed in Te Kowhai for over 41 years. We’ve raised three children and now have two grandchildren.

I was a police officer in Auckland and Hamilton, then spent 17 years in the Ministry of Justice (Courts). I’ve served on the local Kindergarten Committee and local BOT and I am currently Vice President of the Waikato Justice of the Peace Association, due to become President in 2020.

I also have a post graduate business qualification from the University of Waikato (Diploma in Business Studies), and am a Judicial Justice of the Peace sitting in the Morrinsville Court.

Holding a RMA Commissioner’s qualification for many years has given me in-depth understanding of the highly complex planning matters facing our Council and its residents. And importantly, as happens often, I’m able to help locals unravel the red tape and jargon around consent issues.

2) What you’re known for at Council.

I’m respected as an advocate and strong voice for ratepayers and residents. I am
on the Economic Development Committee of five selected senior Councillors
and the Mayor. It is the ‘strategic committee of Council’ and has unique input into
Council’s strategic decision making. From that Committee I led the Blueprint
community consultations across the District, and am part of the cross-border
committee that seeks to resolve issues with Hamilton City.

Because of my range of life and business experiences I demonstrate robust
knowledge over a wide range of topics. My business qualification helps me
successfully scrutinise, and often challenge, budgets and expenditure. My 12
year’s experience on the Council ensures strong representation by someone who
knows how to inject our community’s goals into the planning and funding system
to achieve positive outcomes.

My experience with law and RMA qualifications mean I can work
actively at a senior level on your behalf; for instance, on decisions relating to the
District Plan such as zoning and issues that directly affect how you live, build and
even where you work and play. As the inaugural Chair of the new alcohol District
Licensing Committee, I’ve presided over 2,000 decisions that have helped make
our communities safer.

Whilst as councillors we are responsible for the whole district, I am respected for
my strong representation of all three communities (Rotokauri, Whatawhata & Te
Kowhai)

3) What’s your first priority at Council this future term.

(a) Making community aspirations top of the list. How? I’ll be working hard to
embed the Blueprint consultation work in line with our community wishes, and I’ll
keep you well informed as we go. As a father and grand-father it has become
important to me that this critical document, which captures our communities
goals, are firmly entrenched and guide council’s decisions for future generation’s
wellbeing.

(b) Continuing to strongly challenge affordability (eg rates) whilst communicating
with you the challenges we all face through inevitable growth.

(c) Looking at the potential impacts of climate change and how we respond is
critical, as is continuing to support economic growth that leads to jobs for our young people and creates thriving, liveable and connected communities.
