Gun buyback events in Otago

Nicole Reporter from Dunedin News

Gun buyback and amnesty collections will be held in Mosgiel on Friday at the Taieri Rugby Football Club.

It will be followed by two other collection events on Saturday and Sunday at the Kensington Army Hall, 24 Bridgman St, Dunedin.

Both events will run from 10am until 2pm.

Police said they are supporting firearms owners to hand-in either prohibited firearms or firearms under amnesty at a local collection event as part of the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Parts and Magazines) Amendment Act 2019.

"We want to ensure these changes are as accessible and easy to navigate as possible," Southern district commander Paul Basham says.

"Ultimately we hope to never again see the kind of harm that we know these types of firearms are capable of causing."

More than 250 buyback events will be held around the country before the amnesty period ends on December 20.
