Tension over man's behaviour towards sea lion

Nicole Reporter from Dunedin News

Members of the public raised concerns over the man’s behaviour towards the animal at Dunedin's St Clair Beach about 12.50pm on Tuesday.

The man left when police arrived, but officers later spoke to him and advised him of “appropriate behaviour around sea lions”, a spokeswoman said.

Department of Conservation coastal Otago operations manager Craig Wilson said a caller to the department said they had tried to intervene but the situation became '’heated'' so police were called.

“This is a timely reminder that at this time of year we see many marine species such as seals and sea lions on our beaches, and sometimes in more unexpected places.”
