Alpha Hotel

Alan from Te Awamutu

Hi, Is nobody interested in the historical buildings of Kihikihi? The Alpha hotel was founded in 1867 by William Corboy and his brother. William died in 1882 and his wife ran the pub until 1899. Encyclopedia states in 1901 there were renovations the Hotel had 24 rooms, an eatery for 30 people plus a billiard room. The Corboys also had a bakery along side the hotel and a store which was situated on the corner of Moule and Whitmore streets.

As seen in the attached article, William Corboy was very supportive of local Maori and was good friends with Rewi Maniapoto.

It was visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
The current owner purchased the Alpha about 5 - 6 years ago, suggesting it was to be used as a brothel, whether it has been I don't know but no one has been near the place for at least three years, windows are broken and I am sure that it is deteriorating because of neglect. Grass and greenery is over grown and in the heat of summer is just the ticket for a fire hazard.

I Have written to the council but obviously they are not interested as they have not replied. Why the heritage society are not doing anything I don't know, but to allow such a historical building to be purchased and leave it standing neglected is disgrace to the owners, historical trust and the district council. Should anything happen to such a building because misuse and neglect, there should be consequenses enforced upon all people involved.

You can help grow the Waikato Community Rugby Fund

The Team from Momentum Waikato

Waikato Rugby celebrated 100 years of service to the community in 2021, but due to the pandemic the long-planned celebrations were not held until late 2022.

A highlight was a black-tie event at GloBox Arena at Claudelands where over 300 people enjoyed a wonderful night of reminiscence, remembrance, reconnection and reflection on what our national game means to the Waikato.

Many people put a lot of work into making the evening a massive success by all sorts of measures. One was fundraising $21,000 for the good of the game through auctions and donations, which has recently been transferred to the Waikato Community Rugby Fund at Momentum Waikato.

The Fund grows in perpetuity, with distributed returns only used for the benefit of the amateur community rugby, forever.

Donations to the Waikato Community Rugby Fund are always most welcome, to find out more and donate click the button below.
