Guava Moth
Spring is here, plum and apricots already budding and flowers open. Before they do, we need to spray with neem oil to protect trees from fungus diseases and create protection from the epidemic of guava moth damage that has spread around the Shore.
Even into the citrus last year.
Neem Oil is an amazing natural (from Neem tree) all round pharmacy.
It targets fungus type diseases like brown rot, gives plants immune systems a boost and treats pest insects while ignoring beneficial ones.
It also works by changing the tree's scent to insects. Making it not a target host for them.
Also comes in granules, which are great for planting root crops like carrots. Quite expensive so I am experimenting with derris dust this year; for targeting the grub stage in the soil.
The other task to do is bag every piece of infected fruit and treat to make sure all bugs destroyed before disposing. Do not compost infected fruit. Hope this helps. The guava moth is so widespread, we all need to be pedantic in fighting it from now on.
Possibly a little seaweed around trees also helps.
I always did all of the above and never had a problem. Didn't even know of the G. moth, that I am now told has been here for 12 years.
However, 2 yrs ago in the very rainy winter I was unable to spray my trees and forgot the seaweed application for a few years. Only, then I
discovered the problem. Which is why I know the above advice works.
