Lines company Aurora denies mayor's claims backup power supply not being sought

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Central Otago News

A struggling lines company denies claims it is refusing to provide a backup power supply to a Central Otago town that lost electricity for more than eight hours during freezing temperatures.

Central Otago mayor Tim Cadogan has written to Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods calling for the Electricity Authority to review Aurora's level of service after Clyde was without power in temperatures that dropped to -10 degrees Celsius on June 14.

In the letter, Cadogan says a backup transformer that failed in 2017 had not been replaced and Aurora had “advised that it has no intention of providing a permanent backup transformer for Clyde and surrounds, putting people again at risk from the harsh conditions in this area”.

But an Aurora spokesperson says: "Our planned investment over the next two years specially includes installing an alternative supply to the Clyde community, which we will be able to switch over to in the event of a fault occurring.”
