Minister gives Christmas deadline to sort out Otago's historic water problems

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Central Otago News

The Otago Regional Council has been given until Christmas to work out how it will fix its broken freshwater planning system.

Environment Minister David Parker set down the deadline after a four-month investigation into the vexed issue of 100-year-old Central Otago water rights.

The investigation found the system was "not fit for purpose" to manage the region's rivers, lakes and aquifers and that the council had inadequate rules for the taking of water and the discharge of nutrients, he said.
