Funky Fungi
At this time of the year, you might notice alien-type formations on the Arborist mulch you have around your garden.
The stinkhorn is a common fungus on mulch in Auckland and first appears as a horn-like growth that can develop arms like an octopus. When mature the stinkhorn produces a foul rotting flesh type odor that attracts insects to eat the slimy tips and then distribute the spores elsewhere. 🤢
Don’t worry, they do not cause plant disease as they grow on dead organic material.
So no need to stress about the fungi… admire them, they are doing a hugely important job of breaking down the organic material and recycling the nutrients back into the soil for your plants to use again....even if they do stink!
