My Kind Neighbour nomination

Donna from Foxton Beach

Ian and Annette are so deserving of the 'kind neighbour' recognition award & prezzy card.

I work as a nurse. The service I work for, was one of the first points of contact during Covid-19. I work 10 hour split shifts and the work load during the height of Covid-19 was unprecedented for us and the stress of it all was at times over-whelming. Annette took it upon herself to cook dinner for me on the days I was working and Ian would drop the meals off at my door or hang the meals in a bag, over the fence. This was Annette's way of helping the greater cause, by looking after me as a nurse taking phone calls from right across our nation, she too was also taking care of the nation through her unselfish service to me.

Our 'bubble' did extend to over the fence, I live alone and only they lived at their home. My nursing is in teletriage, so no face-to-face contact with anyone, we made sure we were safe as our respective bubbles merged in to one, albeit over the fence.

For many years since Ian and Annette have been my neighbours, Ian has kept a beautiful vegetable garden, not a weed in sight and I have been the recipient of homegrown veges that have been left in a bag, hung on a hook over the fence, every Friday and sometimes more than just weekly. Not only have I been blessed with vegetables; but fresh fish too because Ian often goes fishing with his brother and there has always been something given to me from 'the catch of the day'.

Annette has also been a wonderful 'counselor' to me over the years with such a wealth of life experience & wisdom, has helped me on many occasions, even if it is just lending a listening ear.

I will miss them as they start off on a new adventure having reached that time in life where downsizing and a smaller home is called for. I wish them every success in their life ahead and am glad they will only be about half an hour away, so I will still be able to visit them.

Turn downsizing stress into strength

Julia Wallace Retirement Village

Downsizing can open the door to a new stage of your life that is rich in opportunity. However, it can be a daunting prospect. If you are embarking on a new chapter of life, the thought of shedding familiar possessions can feel even more stressful. This can be true even if the life changes are a good thing, such as a move to somewhere you will love to live.

Once you understand why you have this feeling, you can reframe it as creating a new environment that will support your present life while reminding you of your best experiences.
