Clock tower voting process

Rob Stockley for Carterton District Council

In another thread (which I refuse to breathe life back into) some of us speculated on the rationale behind one voting slip per household. Some lamented that every person in the house should get a vote. I suggested that maybe it was meant as one vote per rating unit. Frank called me out asking what about tenants? It really doesn't matter because that was all speculation.

At the Council meeting last Wednesday a report into the vote was presented to council and discussed. We heard that the vote had generated huge community engagement. While the voting process isn't perfect it was very cheap - around $400 for advertising in the Crier and some cardboard boxes. We were told that an official vote (like the current one for council and mayor) would have cost ratepayers several thousand dollars.

So like it or not, the vote has been done on the cheap. I'm okay with that because I don't think it warranted any more ratepayers money being spent. At the very least it will give the new council an idea of what the community was thinking.
