Minimum Pay Changes – Employers are you prepared?

Steve from NewbyHR

From 1 April 2019, you will have to adjust the rates you pay your employees if they are currently on a minimum wage.

What will the new Minimum Wage rates be?
• Adult Minimum Wage – $17.70 Per Hour. This applies to all employees over 16 years of age.
• Starting-Out Minimum Wage – $14.16 Per Hour. This applies to employees aged 16-19 entering the workforce for the first time. However, there are certain requirements to use this wage rate.
• Training Minimum Wage – $14.16 Per Hour. This applies to employees 20 years or over who involved in relevant industry training to become qualified. However, there are certain requirements to use this wage rate.

Will your business have to pay extra?
If your business currently pays less than the minimum wage to your employees, you do need to increase rates.

What do you need do?
• If you do your own payroll, make sure that you comply.
• If you have a payroll provider pay staff, make sure that they tell you if pay rates need to increase.

What other impacts might occur?
You may find that current staff paid more than the minimum rates ask for pay increases to keep up with this increase (keep their margin). You may also find that new staff ask for more money.
