Vandalism in Kauri Glen Reserves

Bob Lang from Kauri Glen Bush Society Inc

Sad to report that in this last week, vandals have removed some of the barriers placed by the Council in Kauri Glen Reserve as temporary closures to several tracks while they are being assessed for the risk of Kauri Dieback Disease. The large wire mesh barriers were dumped into one of the streams in the Reserve. The Kauri Glen Bush Society has been working with Pest Free Kaipatiki and the Council to try and protect the kauri bush areas and the closures, while temporary, were taken to try and protect the spread of this disease until further precautionary measures could be taken. It seems unbelievable that with all the publicity regarding Kauri Dieback and the presence of it in Kaipatiki Reserves, that there are some people who have no regard for the environment or our heritage and are not concerned about the possible loss of the remaining Kauri bush remnants in Auckland, or indeed in New Zealand. The police have been informed and the matter is being investigated. The community is asked to be patient with the current restrictions and follow instructions in using the tracks that remain open.
