Living at density - yes or no?

Elena Heinrihsone Ray White St Heliers

These days people in NZ, well especially us Aucklanders, get used to the idea of living at density.
I live with my son in St Heliers in a flat of 4. My friend with her kids just moved into an apartment of 8.
We get to realise that in larger cities higher density is inevitable for many reasons. Distance from work and cost of land are the main ones in Auckland.

More and more people settle for less lawn and less garden maintenance cost and time in order to be closer to the city. Those like me who come from different cultures are quite used to living in apartments. Apartments and terrace houses become more and more popular all over Auckland not only for younger people or empty nesters, but families with kids too. We all have to get used to the idea that the apartment building can be built almost anywhere in our areas, so can be right next to our house.

I personally would always choose proximity to the city over the size of the section. But that’s me. My friends have different preferences. Some own a lifestyle block out south and just bought some lambs. Some move to Tauranga, Napier or Nelson in order to be able to afford a bigger house and better lifestyle.

Have we embraced living at density yet or are we still a long way away from giving up our backyard grass? What’s more important for you? What do you think?

Turn downsizing stress into strength

Grace Joel Retirement Village

Downsizing can open the door to a new stage of your life that is rich in opportunity. However, it can be a daunting prospect. If you are embarking on a new chapter of life, the thought of shedding familiar possessions can feel even more stressful. This can be true even if the life changes are a good thing, such as a move to somewhere you will love to live.

Once you understand why you have this feeling, you can reframe it as creating a new environment that will support your present life while reminding you of your best experiences.
