Electric Vehicle Charging
Did you know that the rules for charging electric vehicles are about to change?
Plug-in electric vehicles are cheap to run and their range is improving. They're becoming more popular in Wairarapa as both fleet vehicles and as private comuter vehicles. The charging leads are usually fitted with a standard 3-pin 10 Amp plug. This enables them to plug into any standard wall socket to charge the vehicle.
There is a downside to using just any socket. Vehicle chargers typically draw 8-10 Amps of current for several hours at a time. All this current generates heat. Socket circuits are designed to cope with heat, however aging components and thermal insulation added later may lead to deterioration in standard circuits. In the best case they simply stop working. In the worst case they cause a fire.
In March 2018 an update to the New Zealand Wiring Rules will be published. It won't become mandatory until 2019 but until then it describes the latest in industry best practice for electricians in New Zealand and Australia. The new rules include clauses specifically aimed at improving the safety of electric vehicle charging sockets.
So if you have an electric vehicle and you'd like to know whether your charging socket will meet the new safety standards then get in touch. I'll come to you and provide a no obligation assessment of your vehicle charging setup.
