Wondering what the new year holds in store for interiors? Here are some of the window treatment trends we’ll be keeping an eye on in 2021.
Warm neutrals: More than ever after 2020, we’re looking at our homes as tranquil retreats from a chaotic world. Calming, neutral tones take the lead – and although greys and whites continue to be popular, interior palettes are warming up. For contemporary neutrals consider colours like cream, oatmeal, sand and taupe.
Fear not though – neutrals don’t have to mean boring! Play on light and dark variations, subtle patterns and layering textures to keep things interesting.
Maximalism: In complete contrast to calming neutrals, maximalism is all about embracing clashing patterns, saturated colours and dynamic interior combinations.
Forget “less is more” – be bold and bring a little fun into your home this year!
Smart technology: Open and close your window treatments at the touch of a button with a remote or mobile app – or add them to your home automation system. Motorisation is taking off in Kiwi homes and curtains and blinds are no exception.
With an app you can pre-set your window treatments to open or close on a timer or do it instantly from your phone – even when you’re not at home.
Layered looks: Think you have to choose between one window treatment and another? Think again.
Many clients are now opting to layer window coverings to achieve the perfect result. For example, adding sheer curtains over a window already fitted with blockout roller blinds can transform the space – with the added benefits of privacy and light control.
Double curtain rods and tracks continue to grow in popularity, giving you the flexibility to draw your sheer curtains independently to the blockout lining behind.
Dual roller blinds are another option which gives great flexibility – blinds are fitted on a dual bracket allowing you to combine sun-filter blinds for daytime privacy and UV light control, and blockout blinds for a good night’s sleep.
Minimalist hardware: Curtain and blind hardware is becoming more slimline and minimal, allowing the product to shine through (while the bits you don’t want to see fade into the background!).
More people building homes are now opting for flush fit tracks for a floor-to-ceiling look. Fitted recessed into the ceiling GIB, flush fit tracks have a very low profile – although you’ll need to plan this early on, as your builder will need to allow for extra nogging and cut a recess into the GIB prior to installation
Sheers: They were a sought-after choice last year and sheer curtains show no signs of slowing in popularity in 2021. Not only do they add a soft and airy look to any room, sheers also filter the light beautifully while maintaining privacy.
Don’t think they need to be plain either – sheers can be made in several different kinds of fabric in a range of colours and patterns.

Green, stone and earth tones are set to be some of 2021’s trending hues. Better yet, they’re great for building tonal looks where you layer different shades of the same main colour group.
