Explore, Learn and Connect HŌpara, Ako me Hono Nau Mai Haere Mai – The Walking Festival is back! Last year’s lockdown gave us a greater appreciation for our local areas and special places to recreate and connect with nature. The 2021 Walking Festival is going to build on this experience. If this is your first time, welcome to the wonderful world of walking. If you’ve joined us before, welcome back: whether you’re a fan of beaches or hills, local history or new developments, getting amongst the wildlife or enjoying a view, socialising or pushing your own physical limits, there’s something for your whānau. This year, we’ve based our 50 plus walks around three pillars of wellbeing: :Explore: Hōpara

Last year’s COVID-19 restrictions didn’t just cancel our plans for a 2020 Walking Festival – they also gave many of us an appreciation for exploring our back yards. This is your opportunity to explore local and as well neighbouring areas all over Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn, and to environments you may never have seen up close.
Don’t take our word for it – hear what our experienced guides have to say. Our walks will teach you all about our natural environment, and the historical and cultural places of interest in our city and district.
The mental health benefits of regular exercise are well known, and the Walking Festival brings you the benefits of connection. Meet people from other districts, migrants and refugees and like-minded walkers, and build connections that last beyond our two weeks of events.

The Walking Festival has something for everyone. We hope you enjoy exploring our beautiful city and region. Key information • All walks are FREE. • Two walks have transport costs: Discover Otamahua Quail Island and Christchurch 360 Trail in 8 days, • Bookings are only required if specified. • Please wear suitable shoes and clothing. • Children must be supervised. • Be prepared – bring a water bottle, snack, sun hat, sunscreen and rain coat. • Walking routes may change due to weather or track changes.

Follow signage from the park’s main entrance to the staging area. Join park rangers on a guided loop walk of epic proportions! Starting at The Groynes, the walk follows the Ōtukaikino Stream to the Waimakariri River on a unique long distance adventure right on Christchurch’s northern edge. Participants must be fit enough to walk all day and carry food, etc. No age limit. The Great Ōtākaro Avon River Walk will leave from New Brighton Pier and follow the Avon River to the top Antigua Boat Shed Cafe. Wander along the tracks and dunes at your own pace, talking to our knowledgable rangers as you go. Soak up this spectacular environment. Time: 9am–2pm Meet: Lyttelton Ferry Terminal for Black Cat Ferry, B Jetty, 5 Norwich Quay Meet to catch the ferry from Lyttelton Harbour over to Ōtamahua / Quail Island, and join in on a guided loop track which passes historic sites and offers beautiful views of Lyttelon Harbour and the surrounding Banks Peninsula. This track circumnavigates Ōtamahua / Quail Island.

Learn about the ecological, cultural and historical journey on the old towpath of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River and Tannery. On the way there are several points of interest including old wharf sites, the cut and barrage and some great areas of planting and bank restoration.
Walk the high, steep roads of Lyttelon, taking in the majestic harbour views, and learn about the the heritage-registered Lyttelton Timeball Station, a prominent local landmark. The original station was significantly damaged and finally collapsed on 13 June 2011 after a large earthquake. The rebuilt Timeball opened in November 2018. Approx distance: 4km

Walk from the Adventure Park Village car park and head uphill, past the regenerating pine forest damaged in the 2017 Port Hill fires. The track is a mixture of single-track and 4WD roads. From the top there are spectacular views from Kaikoura round to Mt Hutt and further! Head down via the chairlift for free. Walk duration 1.5 hours. Headlights/torches are required and warm clothing is recommended. The chairlift has a 1 metre height restriction. Limited to 20 people per guided group. Discover Ōtukaikino! Time: 11am–12.30pm Meet: Car park off Main North Road, between Chaneys Corner and the Belfast end of the Northern Motorway This guided DOC walk will let you discover the regenerating wetland life of the springfed waters of the Ōtukaikino stream. There are plenty of great spots to look for water-life along this loop track – common bullies, native snails, short and long-finned eels (tuna), juvenile native fish and various aquatic insects.
