September - November 2019

Happy Spring to You All! It seems that we have been very fortunate to experience and mild and not too soggy winter this year. Lambs and calves in the paddocks, bees are getting busy on spring blossoms, and deciduous trees are budding up.

Many Care Groups will have had a busy planting season - with trees going in for Arbour Day and Matariki celebrations around our communities and many winter ‘refresh’ plantings for Council civic gardening teams.

There is a whole heap of great events happening in Spring including the Birds of Plenty Festival and Kiwi Month – so please join in!

Here they are! – Jane

Getting Ready for Pest Season!

Kiwi Trust Trap

The next few months are a busy time for the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust as they ready for peak 'Stoat Season' over the summer months, as well as all the other pests that plague our reserves at this time (e.g. rats, possums and wasps!).

Our Pest Control Team Leader, Gaye Payze will be running several working bees in September to prepare tracking tunnels and bait for stoat, possum, rat and wasp traps.

For further details on how to get involved with these activities, please contact the Trusts Volunteer and Events Coordinator, Dani Guy.

Kiwi

October is Kiwi Month!

Whakatāne Kiwi Trust are celebrating National Kiwi Month by running a number of fun events throughout October, including guided walks through Ōhope Scenic Reserve and a Kiwi Wandering Trail Day in the school holidays.

They’ll also have their Information Trailer parked up at Mahy Reserve over Labour Weekend for people to learn about the Trust and how to get involved.

The Whakatāne Library is also getting involved with a colouring-in competition, kiwi-themed book readings for pre-schoolers and a kiwi book display.

Whakatāne Kiwi Trust Environmental Educational Programme

Whakatāne Kiwi Trust’s new Education and Marketing Coordinator, Leah Murphy runs the Trust's Environmental Education Programme which is open for students aged from 5 to 13 years of age; and usually includes a school visit and a guided walk in Ōhope Scenic Reserve.

To date, Leah and her fantastic team of volunteer guides have taken over 500 students on Kiwi Tracker walks this year, and spots are booking up fast for the remainder of 2019. About 50% of our students are from local Whakatāne schools, with the remainder visiting the district on school camps.

Waiotahi Contractors Limited, one of the Trusts main corporate sponsors sent a team of employees on the Kiwi Tracker Walk recently, as they sponsor the Environmental Education Programme. Leah wanted them to experience the programme firsthand by having a workplace presentation and going on the same walk as the students. By all accounts, the Waiotahi Team had a great time and we loved showing them around!

For any enquiries regarding our Environmental Education Programme, please contact Leah Murphy via email: education@whakatanekiwi.org.nz
