Stacked herb planter

A simple yet stylish herb planter that uses four differently sized terracotta pots and a selection of cool colours.

You will need: Four terracotta pots of different sizes, good quality potting mix, paintbrush, Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Cutty Sark, Resene Half Opal, Resene Sea Nymph, and Resene Stromboli, selection of small herb seedlings, trowel.

Top tip: This container could also be placed on a deck, but ensure the base pot sits on terracotta pot ‘feet’ or small blocks to aid drainage and prevent moisture damage to the decking.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Manhattan.

Handy hint: Position your planter in a sunny spot, sheltered from strong winds and keep it well watered – especially during the warmer months.

Technical tip: Our pots were purchased new, but if reusing old weathered terracotta pots, before painting, make sure they are thoroughly cleaned and treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer.

Planting ideas: We used a selection of small herbs, but this stacked planter could also be used for seasonal colour, strawberries and salad vegetables. Also consider using it to grow small plants from seed or cuttings.
