Your Sustainable School National

The delivery of Your Sustainable School National wrapped up in July 2023. We are now working with the information schools have provided us to present our final report to the Ministry for the Environment in May 2024. Watch this space for the outcomes of this programme.

Have you participated in a YSSN workshop and would like to continue the conversations and share ideas? If so, you may wish to join our Your Sustainable School Aotearoa Facebook Group.

Engage your brain and ignite your passion!

The Your Sustainable School programme is a nationwide programme offering free Train the Trainer workshops. We give you the tools to design and implement a bespoke waste minimisation programme at your kura/school or kōhanga/early childhood centre.

These 1-day workshops are for teachers, educators, caretakers and administrative staff who are keen to lead the charge and be the change.

What’s in a workshop?

  • We’ll talk about waste minimisation in the context of Climate Action; discuss linear, recycling and circular economies; think about waste reduction messaging and how we connect with our audiences; examine the waste hierarchy and how to use it to frame our thinking… and there’ll still be plenty of time to exchange ideas with other participants.

  • If that’s not enough for you, we’ll also talk about how we can use waste audits to establish baselines and measure progress, some simple planning tools, and there’s even a bit of policy writing thrown in for good measure! To bring it all together, we finish the day with a step-by-step guide to creating a resilient, sustainable waste minimisation programme.

Think you’re the only one who cares about waste?

  • We understand it can feel lonely out there, so we have a special period set aside for you to hear from local councils and environmental groups about the ways they can support you

  • The best support you’ll have after the workshop is each other. Your workshop rōpū will become your very own self-sustaining network of empowered, passionate educators who will drive down waste in your community.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.
