Upcycled chandelier

DIY project from NZ Gardener magazine

Up your potted plants game with this easy recycling project from Rose Hughes.

Make a hanging planter out of an old chandelier
Learn how to upcycle a chandelier

You will need

  • Chandelier – I found one on trademe
  • 5 x plastic pots – base should be a similar size to the cups on the chandelier
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Fine sandpaper

Cost:  Depends on the cost of the chandelier; I spent $100 (excludes paint, aerosol spraygun and plants).

Instructions

Step one:  If possible, remove all of the internal wiring from the chandelier or trim wiring so it is not visible.

Step two:   Cut a circle out of the bottom of the pots so that they will fit snugly over the old lamp holders.

Step three:  Sand the chandelier gently and, with a paintbrush, undercoat this and the pots with the Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to dry. Following the instructions carefully, use the aerosol spraygun and your chosen test pot colour (I used Resene Endeavour) to spray the top coat. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Step four:  Attach the pots to the lamp holders. Plant up and hang.
