Calling on community input to help shape the Recovery Budget
Councillor Bartley supports the need for continued services at local libaries

Auckland Council’s consultation for its 10-year Budget is currently underway and Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward Councillor Josephine Bartley is seeking support from her community by asking them to have a say.

“This is our city’s Recovery Budget, it maps out how Auckland Council is going to invest over the next 10 years, which is especially important due to the economic effects of COVID-19,” explains Bartley.

"I am asking you to help guide us to the right places and projects across Tāmaki Makaurau by reviewing the proposal and letting us know if we have it right.

“Who knows better where this money should be invested than the community itself."

Like many cities across the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a squeeze in the city budgets. Auckland Council is now facing a $540 million revenue shortfall over the next three years. “The council needs to continue to support what our community treasures, and I will be advocating that this includes our parks, our libraries, our community facilities, and our community events.”

“It is important that we don’t lose momentum on some of our most important local projects," explains Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair Chris Makoare.

“Especially investment in the Waikaraka Park Masterplan and the Onehunga Transport Hub initiative, which our community has already indicated need to remain priorities.”

The Recovery Budget aims to continue to invest in people, businesses, infrastructure and environment. Tell us what you believe is needed most to help shape your local community and the Auckland region towards a brighter future.

“The Recovery Budget aims to be financially prudent by disposing of unneeded properties, finding operational savings and moderately increasing debt levels. The budget aims to maintain our long-term commitment to an annual 3.5 per cent rates increase with a one-off increase of 5 per cent next year.”

Have your say

Public feedback is open until 22 March 2021.
