The NZ Transport Agency will be replacing the Old Māngere Bridge and local communities and people who travel through the area are invited to come and see the plans for the replacement bridge.
Five community events will be held for people to find out more about the project and see what the new, high quality walking and cycling connection over the Manukau Harbour will look like.
A replacement bridge has been in development since 2012, with resource consent granted in 2016. Between 2012 and 2015, a lot of work with mana whenua, communities, businesses and Local Government partners was carried out to find out what people liked about the old bridge and what features they’d like to see in the replacement.
Feedback gathered during this time helped influence and shape the development of the bridge’s design to ensure it will work for the people using it while reflecting shared cultural and heritage values.
The Transport Agency is committed to designing and building a replacement bridge that becomes a much-loved community asset like the old structure that connected communities across the harbour and served as an appealing public space and popular fishing spot.
The Old Māngere Bridge provided an important connection between the communities of Onehunga and Māngere Bridge for more than a hundred years until it was closed in late 2018 for safety reasons.
