Neighbourhood News - The official newsletter of the Meadowbank and St Johns Residents Association

February 2020

Hello <<First Name>>!

Welcome back to a brand new year. We hope that all our residents have had a great break over summer. If you've made a new year's resolution to do something to improve our environment then why not get yourself a rat trap and get trapping in your backyard? Send us an email and we can get you sorted. The Orakei Local Board is putting together their 3-year plan and we strongly encourage everyone to tell them what they think the priorities should be. See below for the upcoming meeting and keep and eye on our Facebook page for further information. With summer still around for a while there are lots of events happening in our area so check out what is coming up below.

We are organising great activities for the day, including; photo competitions, a photo exhibition, historic photo treasure hunting, community heritage walks, food and drink, and of course, prizes for the best photos.

Monthly Meeting: Orakei Local Board 3 Year Plan

At our next monthly meeting we will have the Orakei Local Board's Democracy Advisor speaking to us about drafting their 3-year plan. This plan sets the direction of local Council activities in the area for the next three years. As part of their preparation the Board is offering members of all Residents Associations in their area opportunities to voice their opinions on what should (and maybe what should not) be in the Plan. Please come along to our next monthly meeting to ensure you have your say. Read more here.

Date: Tuesday 11 February 7:30pm
Location: St Chads Church

We Need a Songbirds Project Coordinator

Our Songbirds Project Coordinator is heading off to explore the world so we are looking for someone to coordinate getting rat traps out to our residents. We need someone to manage the email address and arrange for people to collect the traps, so not a huge time commitment. We could split the role among a few people to make it even easier so if this sounds like something you could help with please get in touch. Read more about the Songbirds Project and if you'd like a rat trap send us an email.

Noisy Planes Over Our Suburbs?

Do low flying planes in our suburbs bother you? Read more here to find out more about our representatives on the group (Orakei Local Board member Troy Churton and local resident Kevin Kevany) who are working with Auckland Airport on plane noise issues on our behalf. You can also have a look at the tool to log complaints about overly noisy planes.

Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive Monthly Update

Finally some good news about the Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive Shared Path Stage 2. The tendering process has started, there is strong interest from suitably qualified contractors and construction looks set to start in April. It may feel like we've been here before but this sounds very promising.

There are still two more years until the shared path is expected to be fully open in 2022. And there is still work to be done to get the critical north-south links across the valley in place. We look forward to hearing more news in the coming weeks.

At a walkover of the route in mid-January with the New Zealand Transport Agency, members of the Orakei Local Board and the various organisations managing the Pourewa Valley, participants were treated to insights and updates about the project itself and the history and ecology of this extraordinary area of estuarine native bush, unique in the Tamaki Makarau isthmus.

Future Perspectives on Pourewa Valley

In mid-December Pourewa Valley stakeholders (including two residents association members) met with the aim of working together to develop the Pourewa Valley Integrated Plan to coordinate activities in the valley and share what the various groups are doing in the area. It was an informative morning and exciting to see everything that is happening and planned in this fabulous green space.

Waitangi Day at Okahu Bay 6 February

In partnership with Auckland Council, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei will commemorate the 180th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, with Waitangi Day ki Ōkahu 2020, a free to all, fun and informative day at Ōkahu Bay. We welcome one and all to join in on this fun, whānau oriented day. With an entertaining stage line up and a variety of delicious food stalls as well as local arts and crafts on hand, Ōkahu Bay is the place to be this Waitangi Day.

Date: Thursday 6 February 10am to 3pm.

Orakei Basin Community Day 9 February

Ōrākei Local Board invite you to join in the fun on Sunday 9 February from 10am to 2pm. Explore the many wonderful opportunities available around the Ōrākei Basin at this free community day. Both on and off water activities are planned throughout the day from model yacht races, water skiing demonstrations, walking tours, sausage sizzle, chill-out zone and so much more. Bring the whole family and try something new. More information here.

Work Starts on Summerset Retirement Village

We've noticed some work started in January at the Parsons' Paddock site at 188 St Johns Rd where a new retirement village will be built. So far we have seen some trees being cleared along the roadside fence line, and apparently some houses have been demolished on Ripon Crescent. We are waiting on some revised drawings from Summerset and will share them as soon as they are ready.

Membership Prize Draw Winner

Congratulations to Alison Wheeler who is our membership prize draw winner, and thanks to M.E Meadowbank Eatery she has $50 to spend on delicious food, drink or take home meals.

Thank you to all our residents who have paid their $10 annual subs to support what we do to help make Meadowbank and St Johns liveable, safe to get around, and help us keep people informed of what is happening and being developed in our neighbourhood.

New Report a Problem Tool for Auckland Council

Rather than phone the council, Aucklanders can jump onto the Council's website and report an issue with one of the Council's places, venues, assets or services. You can use your smart phone and and it can pinpoint your location if needed, if you are actually at the area of the problem. You can upload a photograph and track the progress of your job too. Visit Auckland Council's website for more information.
