Neighbourhood News - The official newsletter of the Meadowbank and St Johns Residents Association

November 2018

Hello <<First Name>>!

The lead up to Christmas is a busy one for us as it is for most people. We will be at Meadowbank Mall this Saturday 3 November to kick off our new bus petition and rat trapping projects and have also organised some notable speakers for our 13 November and 11 December meetings (see details below). We have had a great response to our membership prize draw so come along to our November meeting to see who is the lucky winner. We have no monthly meeting in January and will be back into it again with more speakers arranged for February, March and our AGM in April, so lots of activity to start the year off. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday or at one of our meetings before Christmas on either Tuesday 13 November or Tuesday 11 December from 7:30pm at St Chads Church on St Johns Rd. Come along and share your thoughts so that you can help us make Meadowbank and St Johns Auckland's most liveable suburbs.

Pick Meadowbank for 30kmh Zone

While other parts of the city are just starting to debate whether they want a 30kmh zone, Meadowbank has been calling for it for months and has leapt on the possibility suggested by Auckland Transport. Meadowbank and St Johns Residents Association Chair Barry Stewart says a raft of the area’s other transport projects are either already completed or underway, and a slow-speed zone fits perfectly with our goals of safety, liveability and community focus. Read more here and drop us a line to let us know what you think.

November Meeting Guest Speaker: MP Simon O'Connor

We have MP for Tamaki Simon O'Connor coming to speak to our next monthly meeting on Tuesday 13 November from 7:30pm at St Chads Church on St Johns Rd. To give him an idea about what topics we are interested in please join our Facebook conversation and post your questions in the comments. You can also email us. What local issues do you want to make sure are on his agenda? What do you want to make sure that our MP is advocating for on our behalf? Looking forward to seeing you there.

Update on Community Centre Redevelopment

The Orakei Local Board held a meeting for people who currently use the Meadowbank Community Centre to discuss the redevelopment of the site. The meeting was well attended with much lively discussion and plenty of questions and concerns raised. The formal consultation process will begin soon ahead of consenting and construction, which may begin as soon as October 2019. We will keep you posted as the project develops. Click here to read more and for a comprehensive list of FAQs.

Last Chance to Enter the Membership Prize Draw

Become a member before our November meeting and you too will be in the prize draw for a $50 Countdown voucher, kindly sponsored by Judith Everitt from Ray White. The good news for those  households who have already paid this year's subs is that you are in the draw. Paying your $10 annual subs is easy, just click here. If you aren't sure whether you have paid or not you can email us, or just pay anyway and any additional payment can be put towards your 2019/20 subs - easy! Read more here or come along to our 13 November meeting at 7:30pm to see who is the lucky winner.

Frustration as GI to Tamaki Drive Shared Path Further Delayed

We were very frustrated to hear that Stage 2 of the GI to Tamaki Drive Shared Path is further delayed with construction not expected to be completed before the end of 2021. Read more here about the delay and what you can do about it by telling Auckland Transport that we want this shared path built quickly! Consultation is open now for sections 2 (through Pourewa Valley) and for replacement railings on section 3 (Orakei Boardwalk) that allow rather than obscure the view, as shown in the picture to the left. Click here to read about the proposed path through Pourewa Valley and look at the handrail options, as well as provide your feedback - a shared path done properly and the sooner the better!

Official Meadowbank Road Crossing Approved

It's coming back and this time with the official tick! Remember the 'ghost' crossing that appeared when the speed tables were installed on Meadowbank Rd? Thanks to the ongoing advocacy of your Residents Association and the Orakei Local Board AT will install a formal pedestrian crossing on the speed table near the corner of Corinth St. We are very pleased that we will have a safe crossing for our children walking to school, and that the ambiguity for drivers will be sorted out once and for all. Thanks to everyone who submitted to AT and thanks to those who kept advocating for a sensible solution.

Be Safe This Guy Fawkes

Guy Fawkes - you either love it or hate it, but regardless of your thoughts make sure you and your pets stay safe this year. Fireworks are banned in public spaces such as beaches and parks so you will need to use your backyard or attend a public event, for example at the Remuera Golf Club on Sunday 4 November at 8:45pm. Animal management officers are busy at this time of year with frightened animals escaping the noise. Click here for tips to keep your pets safe and to familarise yourself with the rules around private fireworks.

Remuera Golf Club Green Space

The Remuera Golf Club has been the subject of much discussion in the media over the past few months, the latest being Mayor Phil Goff proposing cycleways to open up the publicly owned asset to the wider public. In the context of improving walking and cycling access between our Town Centre and residential areas, and through to Lunn Ave and Colin Maiden Park, we think the Mayor’s idea has merit. We spoke to Chris Davies, GM of the Remuera Golf Club about the proposal. He said "Remuera Golf Club has been in discussions for a long time with Council, our local board and other sports clubs as to how we can improve our facility and offering that greater serves our community. We are on a journey, moving away from ‘golf only’ to more lifestyle centric offerings." He also emphasised that Remuera Golf Club is a public facility and all are welcome to play on the course, visit the golf shop, driving range and Winstone’s Café.Bar.Bistro. We hope to have Chris Davies speak at one of our monthly meetings in 2019 to talk more about the golf club and its planned future developments.

Don't Flush Wipes Down the Loo!

Councillor Desley Simpson's Facebook post last week about raw sewerage being discharged into Purewa Creek is a timely reminder to make sure that we are not flushing wipes down the toilet and to keep fat out of the wastewater system. To read more about the legacy issues with the Purewa wastewater network and what is being done to improve the system click here. We've also included some great posters from Watercare so you know what can and can't be flushed.

See You at Meadowbank Mall on Saturday

We will be at Meadowbank Mall on Saturday 3 November between 2pm and 4pm. This year we are promoting two of our newest projects - launching a petition to Auckland Transport to include a bus service to the St Johns Park area, and building on the rat trapping project to eliminate rodents from our suburbs by loaning traps to our members. If you are interested in placing an order for a rat trap (with full instructions) or would like to support our petition, please pop in to see us, or come have a chat and show your support. We will also have more information at our 13 November meeting too.
