What is the difference between Fibreglass and Wool Insulation?

When it comes to Insulation there are a range of different options and materials to choose from, with two of the most common forms being fibreglass and wool. Both materials are great at keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but what is the difference, how are they made and what are their key benefits?

Fibreglass Insulation

How is Fibreglass Insulation made?

Fibreglass Insulation is most commonly made from recycled glass bottles that are melted down at very high temperatures and mixed with the key binding agent resin and other ingredients such as sand, borax, soda ash and limestone. This melted mixture is then spun into fibres which causes millions of small pockets of air to form. The spun fibres are then sucked through a machine which heats up and cures the resin and then drops onto a conveyer belt resulting in a large mass of glass wool to form.

Benefits of Fibreglass Insulation
  • Fibreglass Insulation is non-combustible, meaning that it won’t catch fire easily.
  • Fibreglass Insulation is moisture resistance, meaning it does not hold or absorb water which helps prevent mould growth.
  • It is very durable, meaning it can be installed around troublesome fixtures and areas in the ceiling easily.
  • Fibreglass Insulation is one of the most economical options to insulate your home.

Wool insulation

How is Wool Insulation made?

Wool is known for its ability to naturally regulate temperature and therefore is a great property to use for insulation. The process begins by sourcing and selecting wool and feeding it through machinery which separates the wool fibres. Most Wool Insulation is then blended with polyester which results in a material that is layered together in several thin sheets and gently melted through an oven to form the final product.

Benefits of Wool Insulation
  • Wool insulation is an environmentally friendly and toxin-free option to insulate your home.
  • Wool naturally breathes which drives moisture away from the home, helping it become warmer and drier.
  • It is safe to touch and handle due to the fact it contains no harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde.
  • The Wool Insulation EnergySmart supply and install is made right here in New Zealand.
