NEWS FROM THE HALSWELL COMMUNITY PROJECT

HALSWELL MARKET UPDATE
A huge thank you to our stallholders, the Halswell Community Project volunteers who give up their time to help out and The many wonderful musicians that play at the market.  Thanks too to Keri our coordinator who brings it altogether each month.    Over the summer months we’ve loved having  a number kids running their stalls in our kids corner.  The market is the result of a lot of talented people who are there to share their talents with everyone.
A big thank you too to St John of God Hauora Trust, who allow us to use their fantastic gardens, and to enjoy one of Halswell’s historic buildings.
It is great to see people sitting out on the lawns, playing games chatting to each other and enjoying the market stalls.
Put our next market into your diary and plan to come along and support the amazing community of people who give up their time and effort to make this monthly event what it is right here in our own back yards!

HALSWELL HERITAGE STORIES

Frederick and Sophia Humm
Frederick Humm aged 21 arrived in Lyttleton in 1875.  On board the ship he met up with a young lady, Sophia March aged 16.  They kept in contact and eventually married in Prebbleton in August 1880. Frederick found work as a ploughman on the Sunnyside farm.
They then moved to an old sod floored cottage in Days Rd, off Nash Rd near Mt Magdala, where he lived all his life. (Freds house was shifted to Halswell from Sunnyside.  It still had barbed wire marks on the corners and is still standing today)
Fred and Sophia had a family of eight - 4 girls and4 boys. The youngest girl Winifred died at a very young age.  The remaining girls all married and raised families living their married lives within a 5km radius of the family home in Days Rd.  The four boys also married and, with the exception of Percy, also resided and raised families within a 5km radius of the family home.
Jack Humm, a renowned horticulturalist, managed Nairns nursery for many years and propogated the flowering apple that carries his name. Len was employed as a steam roller driver for the Christchurch Tramway Board for most of his working life. Percy Humm was employed as a groom at Kinlock, Little River before farming at Kaikoura for many years.  Albert created some of the leading gardens in the city between 1920 and 1945 as a landscape gardener/designer.

Frederick Humm the Roadman
When Frederick moved to Days Road, he gained work as a ploughman at Gaithfield farm, now known as Spreydon Lodge, starting at 5am to feed horses then go home for his breakfast.  He eventually took up employment as a roadman for the Halswell County Council. His transport was his bicycle on which he carries the tools of his trade, a shovel strapped to the top bar. Weather did not in any way hinder his activities and he could be seen draining water off the road shoulders with his trl while he was dressed in his oilskin coat.  Over the period before he retired in his late seventies, he was foreman in charge of roading maintenance, still using his cycle to cover the area controlled by the Halswell County.
Fred could neither read nor write or drive a motor car so his daughter Gladys would take him on a tour of the county roads at least once a month on a Saturday so he could plan the next months work.

Albert (Abb) Humm Cyclist and Gardener
Albert (Abb) Humm,as well as being a noted landscape gardener, still had time for his hobby as a cyclist. He excelled at the Halswell sports days that were held on the Domain in all the cycling events.
He is also noted as a long distance cyclist. The photo below shows Abb in a long overcoat and his cycle accompanied by supporters on a wet morning in Cathedral Square before his record un-paced ride to Dunedin on Feb 17th 1909 in a time of 14 hours 1 minute.  A good time in those days from Christchurch to Dunedin by a single cyclist.

Thanks to local historian John Moore for these biographies.
