Devonport Mid-Winter Swim

When: Saturday 1 July, 12:00 noon
Venue: Devonport Beach, Windsor Reserve

Calling all mid winter swimmers! Come along in your best swimming costume and join the Druid of Devonport in celebrating the mid winter solstice at this iconic Devonport event! Winter Fun Preschool Play Mornings

When: Tuesdays 9:30am - 11:00am, runs to 24 October
Where: The Rose Centre, School Road, Belmont

Devonport-Takapuna local grants - call for applications 

Do you have a great idea that would benefit our community that needs a bit of love to get off the ground or deliver? Local grants tend to be for amounts over $2k, but not more than $10k. The latest round of local grants closes Friday 28 July. To learn about the criteria and how to apply, click on the link here.

North Shore Fund - call for applications

Applications are now open for the North Shore Fund, the most recent addition to Auckland Foundation’s annual granting. Auckland Foundation is calling for applications from groups with projects that address social disadvantage, promote health and wellbeing, or strengthen community in the areas of Devonport-Takapuna, Kaipātiki, Upper Harbour, and Hibiscus and Bays.
Grants are available up to $5k, and will be targeted at those smaller predominantly volunteer-run organisations that otherwise don’t get a lot of funding. Collect your FREE rat trap

Devonport Peninsula residents

When: Saturdays 1 July, 8 July and 15 July, 11:00am - 1:00pm
Venue: Devonport Community Library, 2 Victoria Rd.

The Devonport Peninsula is part of the North-West Wildlink, a vital corridor for native birds as they fly from the Waitakere Ranges to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and back. But introduced predators, such as rats, are taking a toll on New Zealand's native birds.
Help protect New Zealand's native bird species - catch a dirty rat! If you can't make it on the above dates, please email: enquiries@norats.org for alternative pickup options. If you have received a letter about this project recently, please bring it with you when you collect your trap.

Community Bushcare Days

When: Saturday 1 July and Saturday 29 July, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Venue: Eskdale Road just across road from Hobby Ave, Birkdale
Cost: Free
Come and help weed in preparation for the winter planting season (1 July) and plant over 300 plants and release plants (29 July). Refreshments provided and some spades. Wear warm clothes, closed in shoes and bring gloves and spades. Register for 1 July here and for 29 July here.

Devonport U3A meeting

When: Wednesday 12 July, 10:00am
Venue: Harmony Hall, Wynyard Street, Devonport.
The next speaker for Devonport U3A will be Dr. Penelope Watson, lecturer at the School of Learning Development and Professional Practice in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland. The issue of school uniforms has recently been aired in our media so it is timely that "Gender and Education in New Zealand" is the subject of the July presentation. Soroptimist North Shore meeting

North Shore Historical Society

North Shore Historical Society marks 40 years this year, with meetings usually on the third Saturday of each month. This month's meeting will feature Phil Sai Louie talking about international national anthems.

TED-Ed@Taka

Venue: Performing Arts Block, Takapuna Grammar School, 210 Lake Rd.

TED-Ed Club is a student-led club formed at the beginning of the year to celebrate ideas of students around the globe. All members meet weekly to research and work on ideas that matter to them the most. Through this they have a chance to up-skill their storytelling, public speaking and communication skills.
They are proud to be the first high school official TED-Ed Club in Auckland licensed by TED USA and can't wait to show you their TED talk at the end of the night. There will be a selection of entertainment acts performed by Takapuna Grammar Performing Arts students.

Level One: Collaboration and Coworking Space

Banish the winter stay-at-home blues and join the Level One community on the Devonport Wharf. A coworking and collaboration space with panoramic views of the Harbour, Level One offers local small businesses and self-employed workers the perfect antidote to the Lake Road traffic woes with a warm and friendly workspace in the heart of Devonport.
Casual desk rates start from $50 a day or a part-time working week from $160 per month. Welcome packs for new-comers

Devonport Community House and Devonport Peninsula Trust are putting together 'welcome' packs for new-comers. Business and community organisations are invited to supply a brochure, flyer or business card for the pack. Please drop your info to Brigid Curran at Devonport Community House (32 Clarence St, Devonport) or Maria Teape at Devonport Peninsula Trust (3 Victoria Rd, Devonport). 
A welcome open day is being planned for Sunday 5 November, 10:00am - 3:00pm at Devonport Community House. More details to follow.

Street Get-Togethers

Devonport Peninsula Trust has some funding available to encourage people living in the Devonport peninsula area (Devonport to Hauraki Corner) to get together with their neighbours to develop neighbourhood connections.

Celebrating 25 years of the Rose Centre

This year marks 25 years since the Rose Centre in Belmont opened for the community. Do you have memories and especially photos from then? Do you know someone who might? As a part of the celebrations a booklet is being compiled to record and share memories from those involved in the early days - a very different time from the present. Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholorship 2018

Soroptimist International exists to inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls. The Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship provides financial assistance to mature women who are studying for a qualification to enter or re-enter the workforce, or change occupation.

Fine Homes Tour of Devonport

Devonport Rotary and Bayleys are holding the third Fine Homes Tour of Devonport on Friday 27 October. Their target is to raise $40,000 to divide equally between the following charities: Alzheimers Auckland, Cure Kids, Plunket and Devonport Rotary. Tickets will be on sale in September through Eventfinda.

Devonport Op Shop in the Arcade

When: Open weekdays 10:00am - 4:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am - 3:00pm
Venue: The Arcade, 6A Wynyard Street
Pop in and see the friendly staff for some bargains including china, kitchenware, books, bric-a-brac and of course clothes and shoes. If you are bringing in a large car load of donated goods please ring either Vanda at: 021 624 326 or Marianne at: 027 4061 663 so the staff can be ready for you. Unfortunately the shop is unable to accept electrical goods, bike helmets or baby car safety seats.

Please bring your own bag for purchases and the op shop would love your spare paper, cloth or hessian bags as they are trying to phase out using plastic bags in the shop. Your support is always appreciated!

Devonport Museum

When: Tuesday to Thursday 10:00am - 12:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 2:00pm - 4:00pm, closed on public holidays
Venue: Devonport Museum, 33A Vauxhall Rd (behind the kindergarten on Mt Cambria Reserve)
Come and see what all the fuss has been lately! The Heritage Rescue series on Choice TV heard about the Museum. After a week of volunteers supported by artists and museum professionals the Devonport Museum has an almost entirely new display interior; a timeline of Devonport, supported by pictures and artefacts; an up-to-date history of lower Victoria Rd. Tributes to protest, boatbuilding, trades, buildings and childhood, and much more.The programme series should start in September, but you can see the results now in your local heritage information centre.

Virtuoso Strings Orchestra

You may have seen the youth orchestra Virtuoso Strings featured a little while ago on Seven Sharp - well they are coming to Auckland! In a celebration of New Zealand talent, Virtuoso Strings will be performing alongside Ria Hall, Lisa Tomlins and Wini Baxter, with a wide range of music.
All profits from this concert go to the Virtuoso Strings Charitable Trust so they can continue to run their free music programme in East Porirua.

Dave Walker

Dave Walker combines fingerstyle guitar and strumming patterns on his Lowden acoustic guitar, which often finds itself in alternative tunings.

Jacquie Walters & James Wilkinson

Two artists from Nelson in concert. Jacquie Walters is a singer/songwriter with a distinctive clear voice and powerful songs. She has toured nationally and internationally and recorded as part of the duo Pounamo in NZ. James Wilkinson is well-known as a virtuoso guitarist and fretless bass master. You will remember him from Rua, and more recently appearing at the Bunker with Toru.

Trainee Restoration Leaders course

A free, highly practical training programme running until October 2017. Registrations have now opened.
Run by the Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre this training programme will give hands-on experience to those wishing to be a planting co-ordinator as a paid job, volunteer or to kick-start their own local planting project. A hot herbal infusion to improve your mood during this winter is a really good idea. Eva Scherer, herbal guru at Ngataringa Organic Garden invites all neighbours, friends and families to NOG. The event will be fundraising with a symbolic koha not only for a tea but also dried herbs for making a healthy infusion or aromatic bath at home.

A Fund-Raising Arts Event to Assist Refugee Resettlement in Aotearoa

A fundraising exhibition from the newly-formed group Art for Change, which intends to raise awareness of the plight of international refugees, and assist to raise funds for the refugee resettlement programmes in Auckland. For more info see the Depot Artspace website.

Michael Krzanich: Someone’s Mana

Celebrate Matariki 2017 with an exhibition at Splash Children's Art Gallery at Devonport Community House. Drawings, paintings, collage, weaving, poems and stories will be displayed throughout July. 

Travel sketching classes

Travel sketching is that quick impression sketched in minutes where you are taught how to ‘see’ your subject. On The Wing

Members of the Handweavers & Spinner Guild, Auckland Inc.

The Handweavers and Spinners Guild showcase new creations that meld traditional techniques with innovation, all to the theme of On the Wing. Formed in 1964 to “advance and encourage the crafts of hand weaving, spinning, dyeing and related fibre crafts” they are thrilled to be exhibiting again at the Depot Artspace. From the Rivers to the Shore: Flyaway Print Exchange

When: Saturday 29 July, 2:00pm - 3:30pm, runs to 16 August
Venue: Depot Artspace Main Gallery, 28 Clarence St.

An art project that explores the connectivity of place through migratory birds.
From the Rivers to the Shore is curated by Devonport printmaker Celia Walker, with over 40 artists from the far north to the deep south invited to produce specific responses to their local environments, particularly highlighting the birds that move between the North and South Islands every year. For more info see the Depot Artspace website.
