To give Samantha much needed freedom and her self esteem back.
Auckland
At the tender age of 42, she had a major stroke on the 9th of November 2012.
She was unable to walk or talk.
After nine months in Rehab Plus and Laura Fergusson (and lots of rehabilitation hours later) Samantha was discharged.
She had suffered a brain blockage on her left-side which had taken out the whole right-hand side of her body, and speech. She worked on being able to speak and gain strength in her left-hand side. Her right-hand side, however, remained defunct.
But she was happy. Along with being discharged she was also given a brand new scooter from the Lotteries Commission which became her lifeline.
This meant that she could (and would) go to Glen Innes for shopping, St John's for Church and visit friends who lived in the area, to Purewa Cemetery in Meadowbank to see her mum, to Sylvia Park shopping centre, to Panmure for her doctors and medication, the Library, and last but not least, a well deserved coffee at her favourite place "... The Coffee Shop with no name."
But with all pieces of machinery, Samantha came to an abrupt stop on Tripoli Road, Panmure. Much like the stroke that took a part of Samantha, her mobility scooter had blown the motor which turned the rear wheels. And she was well and truly stuck.
She is now housebound….
Now this is where you come in….
Samantha has asked WINZ for a loan to repair or buy a new one. The amount that they would give her (which she will pay back) is $1,500. What we would like is to raise an extra $3000 (which we would add to the $1500) to enable us to get her a brand new scooter.
The mobility scooter which she currently has will take 42 days to order the part from overseas and repair; Samantha has spent (currently) 9 days housebound which is de-motivating for her. Another 42 days would be the death of her.
If Samantha were to get the 2nd-hand one the warranty is only for 1-year and will most likely give up the ghost sooner rather than later.
So getting her a new one is what we'd like her to get.
She is still young at 49 years old!
I am a close friend who cares very much about Sam's wellbeing, and want to see her enjoying life again.
A new Mobility Scooter. Any surplus funds will be donated to Samantha for her other personal needs. If the goal isn't met, the money will be saved until she has enough funds.
Many thanks 4 March 2020
