Vote for your preferred candidate here

David Seymour is running a Youth MP election to find a student from the Epsom Electorate to represent him in the 2022 Youth Parliament. If that sounds like you, we hope you'll seek a nomination.

Step 1: Register for the Epsom Electorate Youth MP Election

You'll then need another student to nominate you.

You, the person nominating you and voters must register.

Nominations closed on October 29, at midday.

Step 2: Start getting votes

Anyone who attends an Epsom Electorate Secondary School or lives in the Epsom Electorate is eligible to vote. How many people can you get to register as voters and help you to victory?

You can use social media, email, word of mouth or any other technique you like to get people registered to vote and (hopefully) voting for you.

Students can register to vote here.

Step 3: Participate in an online debate with other candidates

The debate took place on October 31, and can now be viewed here.

Step 4: The vote

Everyone who has registered will be sent a link to vote for their preferred candidate after the debate. Voting will begin on Sunday, 02 November and conclude by Sunday, 07 November with winning candidate announced in December.

To be nominated, you must be

  • aged 16 – 18 years old (inclusive) on 12 November 2021
  • live in or attend school within the boundaries of the Epsom Electorate

If you have any questions or would like more information on Youth Parliament 2022, you can read the Youth Parliament FAQs here. Alternatively, you can contact the Epsom electorate office on 09 522 7464 or [email protected]

Good luck.

What is Youth Parliament?

Youth Parliament provides young people an opportunity to participate in the parliamentary process and encourages their on-going participation in decision making in a meaningful way.

Youth Parliament has five objectives:

  • replicate the Parliamentary process
  • involve as many young people as possible (before and after the event)
  • maximise the educational opportunities of the event
  • enhance Parliamentary public relations
  • make known the views expressed to appropriate policy agencies.

What do Youth MPs experience during Youth Parliament?

During the two days at Youth Parliament in July, Youth MPs will have the opportunity to debate legislation, sit on select committees, and ask oral questions of Ministers.

Activities for Youth MPs during tenure period from 1 March to 31 August 2022 include:

  • training to prepare for their roles
  • meeting with the MP who selected them
  • participating in activities in association with the MP who selected them, such as attending engagements with their MP to experience ‘a day in the life’ of an MP
  • giving a speech to high school students on the value and importance of voting
  • the opportunity to carry out an individual or group (with other Youth MPs) project on topics / issues of importance to young people
  • researching the topics to be discussed at Youth Parliament, and consulting peers to understand their views.
