• Cancer Research Trust NZ was established in 2002 by New Zealand energy company Genesis Energy who endowed the Trust with $6.5 million between 2002 and 2003.
• The key objectives of the Trust are the funding of innovative cancer research, and the professional development of scientists and clinicians working in the field of cancer-control and palliative care.
• From 2004 to 2015 the work of the Trust was primarily funded by Genesis Energy Customers, who donated to the Trust via their energy bill. This allowed the capital to grow and income from these investments now covers the modest operating expenses of the Trust and funds some research, and professional education of medical and research personnel. The balance is funded by public donation.
• By the end of 2019 more than $16 million will have been applied to the fight against cancer.
• The Trust is now an independent and financially secure charity, but to continue the level of funding required to keep New Zealand at the forefront of cancer research, corporate and public donations are essential, and gratefully received. Every cent of every $ is applied to the work of the Trust.
