Kia ora <<First Name>>,

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

We've all heard the saying. The idea that it is better to try to avoid problems in the first place, rather than trying to fix them once they arise is the perfect analogy for the work that we do.

This month's National Campaign Safer Communities asks our members and supporters to be proactive by taking simple steps to bolster the safety of your household and community.

For example, do this by:
  • Looking out for your neighbours
  • Locking your doors every time you leave your home or vehicle unattended
  • Creating a Neighbourhood Resilience Plan
  • Reporting crimes when they happen through 111 or 105 if they've already happened
  • Displaying Neighbourhood Support signs and stickers in high visibility areas as a badge of honour that shows others your community cares

A very warm nau mai to our newest team member, Hannah White, who joins us in a brand new role as our Taitokerau Community Advisor focusing on supporting our Northland members and neighbourhoods.

Ko Hannah White ahau.

My family has lived in Northland for 5 generations. I grew up in Whangarei and spent 8 years of my 20s living in Auckland. Since moving home about 8 years ago, I have been involved in a number of groups, activities & events around Whangarei. I love living in a small community where I walk down the road and see many people I know and connect with. I am excited to now be working for an organisation committed to establishing, supporting and furthering those connections to create a community where we all feel safe and loved.

Great to see Masterton Neighbourhood Support and NZ Red Cross working together to 'Celebrate Community' last month through joint Neighbours Day events!
Neighbourhood Support North Shore have been busy with two weekends in a row of community events. On Saturday the 20th they held a Celebrating Communities - Rock Painting event in Beach Haven. Whānau and friends came and let their creative juices flow, decorating rocks while getting to meet some of their neighbours.

The following weekend, was a Neighbours Day Aotearoa - Flower Pot Painting event held on the 27th in Browns Bay. As part of this year's 'The Great Plant Swap' theme, residents got to enjoy the sun and fresh air while painting mini terracotta pots. Afterwards, each participant got a plant for their pots to take home with them.

If you're a Neighbourhood Supporter who took part in Neighbours Day this year, make sure to send us your photos at: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz

   FROM OUR PARTNERS
Do you know why firefighters don’t like fire movies? They show bright orange flames, fire trucks outside and people standing on the street while firefighters rush in and out, saving members of the family. Real house fires are a whole different story.

Here’s what the movies don’t tell you:
  • Smoke from a house fire can kill in less than 3 minutes.
  • 1/3 of residential fires attended last year did not have smoke alarms installed.
  • You are 4x more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working alarm.

Give yourself a warning. Check or install smoke alarms today: escapemyhouse.co.nz/sorted
