Placemaking Programme

People and cycling on the Kamo Shared Path

Creating great neighbourhoods of the future starts with great planning. The development of the Placemaking plans is a collaborative planning process. Meaningful engagement with tangata whenua, the community, stakeholders and developers is key to the success of building and implementing these plans.

Waipū and Parua Bay Placemaking Plans

In order to ensure the Placemaking Plans align with the 2024-34 Long Term Plan, the completion of the Placemaking Plans and their adoption have been postponed to 2024.

Our Elected Members are progressing through the steps to develop the 2024-2034 Long Term Plan. The decisions arising from this process will inform the timing of the actions within the Placemaking Plans for Waipū and Parua Bay. This means a significant change to the project timeline but is necessary to ensure the documents are not in conflict, and to better communicate Council investment decisions.

What are Placemaking Plans?

Placemaking Plans inform how an area will change, grow, and develop over the next 20 to 30 years.

They help guide our future planning and infrastructure work and align with Long Term Plan and Annual Plan funding.

Whangārei is growing and changing but there is a gap when it comes to understanding how this affects specific locations. A ‘one size fits all’ approach is not the best for our diverse District because each place is different. Communities have their own set of qualities, unique characteristics and people who make them special.

Collaboration with the community and tangata whenua is a key part of developing Placemaking Plans.
