I was recently speaking with one of my customers whose only family is her sister and her nephews. Her mum and dad have since passed on, and she commented on how lovely it was that I get to work with my mum.

When one of us is sick, or looking after family, the other steps up to bear the load. Other times, we work in partnership, pulling in the yoke together.

Wouldn't want it any other way.

Our personal development programme has really helped me to overcome LACK in some buckets, FILL other buckets and understand how much is actually in our control.

If your bucket needs a little more filling, it might be time to INVESTIGATE A WAY OF THINKING that really helps you to understand why things are they way they are, and what to do to change it.

Do you REALLY back yourself?

He ran 10km in 59.06!🥇

What OPPORTUNITIES do we overlook, because we just don't back ourselves? Must be human nature that we focus on the cost of not achieving something, rather than putting our best foot forward and backing ourselves.

I am so thankful for the personal development programmes we have in this Business, that help us to expose the limiting thoughts and actions we have, and overcoming this!

For many, this is not a big deal. In November last year, it felt an impossibility for me. I was training to run a 5km, and was struggling. (I'm just not made for running).

The Hawkes Bay 10km was the 3rd 10km I have completed this year. Each time, it becomes a little more possible, because my body is catching up to my mind.

How I view, and experience the 10km is so different to when I first did it.

Wealth Creation, or wealth stagnation. The role of our ego in our money story.

Charmaine Rees from Prosper By Design Ltd

The plan for a successful life has always been a very simple recipe to follow. Go to school.  Get an education. Use what you’ve learned and apply it in a job. Spend less than you earn.  Be a model employee and retire from the job at 65.     You will have paid off your house, had a few … View moreThe plan for a successful life has always been a very simple recipe to follow. Go to school.  Get an education. Use what you’ve learned and apply it in a job. Spend less than you earn.  Be a model employee and retire from the job at 65.     You will have paid off your house, had a few memorable family vacations and be considered successful by many.

I didn't want this type of success.

I question this plan, and I suspect there are many others it just doesn’t work for anymore.

I am the product of a school system which prepared me to be a model employee. I was taught to follow instruction, avoid mistakes at all costs, know the boundaries of my abilities, and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Consequently, I feel that most of the “decisions” I made under the age of 25 were based around wanting to bake the best cake, using this age-old, true and tried recipe.   I chose subjects at high school that I was advised would look the best on my education transcript. That would give me enough points to get me into the right universities.    My major study at university was based on the subject areas that were the current trend for the “big 5 companies” to hire graduates from.

I didn’t even contemplate working for a run-of-the-mill business when I left University or consider subject areas that “weren’t profitable”.    I couldn’t fathom the decisions that my friends studying the arts, philosophy and history were making.  How were those subject areas going to get them ahead in life?

I was so focused on following the path of getting hired by a top consulting firm, that none of what really matters to me was even considered.

It is also no wonder that after my master’s degree, I was hired by Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young. Focus and dedication DOES get you were you want to go.   At this time, I wasn’t fully aware of how powerful our mindset and focus can be on getting us what we want.   As they say “be careful what you wish for….you might just get it”.

Why does that old plan that worked so well for our parents and grand-parents no longer work for me?

My needs are different.

We’re well past the years of the great depression which was the creation of a poverty-conscious mindset that has impacted at least three generations since those times. It is a mindset, that if you listen carefully to the way that people talk today, you can still find hidden in the unconscious thought processes.    But a poverty-conscious mindset doesn’t serve us today.

A poverty-conscious mindset holds us back from investing in our first rental property, because our parents suggest we might not be able to pay the interest on the loan if it increases to levels that they saw 40 years ago.   This fear feeds that mind-set, and instead, we put our sizeable deposit into a bank term deposit. Its safer.  Less risky.

As a nation, I believe we’re climbing Maslow’s Pyramid, generation by generation.  The safety needs and wellbeing needs of our grandparents and great-grandparents are something that most of us don’t even give any thought to.   Parents in the 60s and 70s experimented with belongingness and love needs, and the children of that generation were craving a feeling of accomplishment.  This generation drive cars that speak to prestige and accomplishment.

The higher we climb Maslow’s Needs hierarchy, our ego starts to be tested, and we demand more of ourselves.

But ego is your financial enemy.  If you don’t keep ego in check, it’s the deadly viper that could keep you broke.   Ego will ensure that your wealth stagnates. Pride of ownership comes at a big price that doesn’t move you ahead.

But it is no surprise that we’re not really equipped to handle this struggle. It’s a new struggle, and one that previous generations weren’t familiar with.  We’re only just working out the rules of this level of Maslow’s needs. We’re learning how to get a handle on this, so that we can use it to the best of our advantage.

Once we master this need, we’ll better know what self-actualisation really is. How we can achieve our full potential, by being true to ourselves, and giving the ego very little room. Ego has no place in self actualisation.

I’m experimenting with a new recipe for financial success, which demands that we look inward for the answers, not outward. A model that is actually very simple.

1.      Set a goal

2.      See this in your mind. Feel it. Interact with it.

3.      Never let circumstances stop you from seeing this picture in your mind.

This recipe relies on instinct, trust and is void of time.  It doesn’t offer a pay rise of 2 years of service.  It offers a hang of a lot more.

Counter-Intention: The thief of your true potential.

Charmaine Rees from Prosper By Design Ltd

She was nervously pacing before her full-length mirror, stretching her toes and patting down her tutu. In a few hours, she was going to be performing in front of the congregation at her Church, and she was experiencing that delicious, unfamiliar feeling of anticipation. This was a goose-bump feeling that she was about to enter into her true potential. She was going to show people what she was capable of.

What a beautiful ballerina Kate would be this afternoon.

When her dad opened the door and stepped into her room, the look on his face make her take a quick in-breath and she felt like she daren’t breath out. He informed her that she wouldn’t be performing this afternoon as planned, because the Elders of the Church had just rung to say that this would mean that she was being sinful. The look on his face, the tears pouring down his cheeks, as he apologised to her, and held her in his arms to comfort her, is what Kate still remembers – decades later.

Now in her early 50’s Kate is still a dedicated soul, putting all her effort into creating things that she is proud of. Her elderly father is still proud of everything she does and tells her that.

But there are times in Kate’s life, when she suddenly doubts her decision to buy into a new business. She second guesses the purchase of a new car, and she gets anxiety just before a big presentation at work.

This debilitating reaction to these normal situations in life is something that Kate has decided she needs to be rid of and has been putting a large magnifying glass over her life – so that she can remedy what is holding her back Kate wants to prove to herself that she has so much more potential than her life is currently manifesting.

Counter-intention: thoughts and beliefs that run contrary to your conscious wishes or intentions. More often than not, counter-intentions are unconscious.

Counter-intention is the thief of potential. It’s the Elders that tell you that you’re not good enough – or worse, that you’re bad for doing something when you’re 7 years old. It’s the teacher that tells you that because you’re doing higher education, you shouldn’t need to ask the question you don’t know the answer to. It’s the parents that tell you to stop wasting their time, when you want to show them your art work from school.

Its like a hand that pulls you down as you try to rise to become the best version of yourself. It tells you that you’re not good enough, people are not interested in what you have to say, that you’re bad, and don’t fit in.

If your life isn’t blossoming right now, then I can almost categorically say that counter-intention will have something to do with that.

It is our destiny to have, to be, to get.

Have you seen a toddler? They are so inquisitive, they want to handle everything. Feel, touch, eat, smell. It doesn’t matter if its garden soil, or the fine china in mummy’s lounge. It is all just beautiful, and wonderful and needs to be explored.

But this inquisitiveness gets beaten out of us (mentally if we’re lucky, and physically if we’re not), and within just few years, we lose that natural born inquisitiveness to explore and play and adventure with our world.

If you think that counter-intention is robbing you of being the best version of yourself, stopping your businesses from thriving, and keeping you from making headway, then what can you do to address this?

My recommendation is that you find an hour, where you can be totally undisturbed. Turn off the phones, email notifications, and know that you’ll be uninterrupted. Sit quietly with your eyes closed, hands on your knees, and breath in and out slowly and deeply. This will force your body to increase its “slow down / break” activity, which is associated with happiness, resilience in the face of stress, and childhood cognitive performance.

Once you feel calm, start to imagine your perfect day. Starting with waking from a deep, restful sleep. Imagine each minute and moment of this perfect day and try to connect with what you’re imagining emotionally.

As soon as you feel a pull to amend what you have just thought about, a tug to scale down your vision because its too grand, a thought that others will think that you’re too greedy, then stop and think about this.

Whose voice are you hearing ? Is it your dad who told you that you wouldn’t amount to anything in life? Is it your mother who just wanted you to be more responsible?

Knowing who the voices are behind the hesitation that you feel before making a purchasing decision, or the anxiety before a big boardroom presentation will help you to put them in their place and realise that these voices have nothing to do with you. They are just a remnant of the past that is no longer serving you.

While the warnings that come from our parents and teachers, and those we look up to, often come from a place of love and wanting us to be kept safe from being hurt, they don’t serve us in our situation which is so vastly different to that our of parents, particularly now with the rapid advancement of technology, the global economy at our fingertips and the rise of the internet, which is still a mystery to most of the older generation.

You’re an infinite being, holding so much potential, so go forth with courage.

Hold your own course, and don’t be swayed up and down with the views and opinions of those that don’t feel the impacts of their opinions or thoughts on your life.

You’re the one that feels the impacts of their thoughts and opinions. Know your own opinion. Trust your gut, and rely on the head, heart and gut to be YOU.
