With ample rainfall and less pest and disease problems you can get bountiful harvests of edibles from your vege garden through the winter! Here's what you can sow and grow in New Zealand in winter:

• Plant: Broad beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, parsley, cauliflower, silverbeet, spring onion, spinach, winter lettuce, kale, beetroot, coriander, peas and garlic.

• Use sheltered areas of your garden to sow broccoli, broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower and peas.

• The shortest day of the year is traditionally garlic planting day, but you can plant through into early spring. Dig the soil over well and add lots of lovely compost.

Applying a mulch will restrict weed growth and help to keep the root zone of winter plants warm. Some crops may also require a cover of frost cloth overnight to protect young tender tips. Don’t forget regular slug and snail baiting. Choose bait that lasts longer in wet conditions.

• There are some beautiful winter annuals you can add to your garden for a splash of colour! Plant calendula, nemesia, pansies, polyanthus, poppy, snapdragon, stock or viola. Encourage longer blooming of winter flowers by liquid feeding.

• Winter is the best time to plant new season roses too. Garden centres will have the best range available now and as the plants are dormant planting stress is reduced.

• This is an excellent time to prune your roses, shrubs and any perennials that are looking untidy, or have finished flowering for the season.

• Now is the time to fertilise garden beds ready for new season's planting.

• Deadhead any plants that have finished flowering for the season to encourage new foliage and flowers.

• Keep on top of weeding and apply mulch around plants to help suppress weeds.

If you've never had your own vegetable garden but always dreamed of having one then perhaps now is a good time! Staying home for the summer holidays may mean you have more time for some new, creative projects in your garden. Here are a few tips to consider when planning a new veggie garden:
1. Decide on a design first. Do you want a geometric one with defined squares, a rambling one with meandering pathways, or perhaps a spiral?
2. Observe where the areas of shade and sun are in your garden so that you design your veggie garden to gain the maximum amount of sun.
3. Include pathways for easy access and to prevent compacting the soil.
4. Make sure your entire garden is an arms length away from any pathway or place stepping stones in bigger areas to avoid standing on the soil.
5. Don’t make your beds too long or you may be tempted to step over them instead of walking around them.
6. If starting from scratch consider installing a drip irrigation system.
7. If your garden is on a slope, design your paths and beds so they lie along the contours of the slope, not downhill.

Tips on using pots in your garden design!

Fill them!
When planting pots there is no need to spend a fortune. Often times one can find some hidden gems in your garden just waiting to be put on display! Common plants such as ornamental grasses, dietes, clivias, aloes, bromelaids, echivaria’s or any other succulents are great in pots.

Group them!
Scattered pots can make your garden look rather messy. When grouped, pots can become an attractive focal point in your garden. Use big stones or pebbles in the same way to accompany and accentuate your pots!

Arrange them!
Grouped pots should normally be arranged with a taller focal pot near the back, and smaller pots to the sides and front. There are no hard and fast rules...experiment with shape, height and form!
