AMI Road Safety Awards winner...

AMI Botany

We are honoured to have been invited to present an award on behalf of the whole AMI team. The recipient of the AMI Community Road Safety Award is RoadSafe Northland, and we were delighted to present the award to Gillian Archer.

RoadSafe Northland is a Northland collective of Road Safety Partners and agencies, under the umbrella of the Northland Road Safety Trust. This charitable trust funds, delivers and supports road safety initiatives in the region on behalf of the Whangārei and Kaipara Districts and the Northland Transportation Alliance, comprising all four Northland councils.

While Northland, like the rest of the country, has a challenging road toll, the incidence of young drivers in fatal and serious crashes has significantly reduced in the last couple of years. Programmes, such as RYDA where nearly 5000 Northland students have participated since inception in 2009, has provided a significant contribution to this reduction.

Gillian of RoadSafe Northland had this to say about the award: “I want to thank Road Safety Education and AMI for the AMI Community Award, for recognising the significant partnership that has allowed this programme to develop and grow in our area. It is timely to acknowledge the many local community partners who have supported this programme over the years. As well as the significant support from local AMI staff and the RYDA team, we have a range of contributors including loan cars provided by Dargaville Ford and Pacific Ford, catering by Rapid Relief Team, support staff from People Potential and Rotary and additional funding from COGS and The Warehouse Dargaville, and of course both Whangārei and Kaipara Councils.

“This award is for all of these partners who have made such a significant Young Driver programme possible.”

Save Lives, #SpeakUp and post a reply – what are you doing to make the roads safe for everyone? We want to hear your inspiring stories.

Meet Laura! She’s a keen Walking School Bus member from Meadowbank School, which AMI is proud to support. We asked Laura about why she loves the Walking School Bus and why she has all those funky tags.

What is your name? "Laura Manning."

What school do you go to? "I go to Meadowbank School."

What is the name of your Walking School Bus crew? "The Walkie Talkies."

How many Walking School Bus tickets do you have? "Each Walking School Bus member gets a ticket that gets clipped each morning. Once you finish a ticket you receive a badge. I am on the highest badge which is the 600-trip walker but I have done more than 1000 walks. I have also got my winter walker badge, my road safety badge and the walking school bus week badge, and because I am a student leader I click everybody tickets each day."

Can you tell us a story of a memorable moment you’ve have on the Walking School Bus? "Recently we had a surf life guard and a fire fighter come to walk with us for super hero dress up day. I also liked the AMI people coming and giving us prizes!"

What is the best part about being part of the Walking School Bus? "On the walking school bus we always get people come and walk with us and there are lots of fun things that you can get involved with and you also get to walk with your friends."
...
Walking School Buses are great ways to get the kids active and to learn about road safety each day. Each group is accompanied by volunteer caregivers to ensure it’s a safe and fun trip. AMI supports Walking School Buses across Auckland and Tauranga by providing hi-vis vests to volunteers And we recently surprised Meadowbank school in Auckland with some bags and sunscreen for the students so they are prepared for the trip.

Maybe your school is keen to set up its own Walking School Bus? Get in touch with Auckland Transport or your local council to get involved. Save Lives, #SpeakUp this Road Safety Week.

Road Safety Week. Save Lives, #Speakup

AMI Botany

This week marks Road Safety Week, where we take the chance to highlight ways to keep each other safe on New Zealand’s roads. This year’s theme is Save Lives, #Speakup, and the week coincides with the United Nations Global Road Safety Week. So what does road safety look like to you? #SpeakUp and post a reply below!

This year we’ve lost too many people on our roads. No death on the road is acceptable. Everyone is entitled to safe and healthy mobility. Here at AMI, we’re committed to making our communities safer for everyone. We’ve helped to fund advanced warning signs for rural intersections – so drivers get an early head’s up to slow down – as well as supporting youth training in over 80 schools through Road Safety Education (RSE) , a nationwide organisation helping young people change the way they think about road safety and lay the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives. There has been huge success through RSE’s RYDA programme and in some areas with their Good2GO programme, which is run for students at schools such as Tāmaki College in Auckland.

Road Safety Week encourages us all to take a pledge – what can we as individuals do to improve road safety? Will you avoid all mobile phone use or take more breaks during long road trips? Save Lives, #SpeakUp below and tell us what your pledge is.
Check out the Road Safety Week website for more helpful tips.
